The controversial issue of club versus county is back on the agenda.
The Tyrone and Donegal County Boards are both having to deal with a fixtures dilemma – with club matches fixed at a time when both counties are involved in a crucial stage of their respective All Ireland campaigns.
Donegal GAA officials will meet tonight at a specially convened county committee meeting to discuss the issue.
Last week, three of the county’s clubs – St. Michaels, Gaoth Dobhair and Glenfin – failed to fulfil their weekend fixtures.
And in this morning’s Donegal Democrat, the chairman of St. Michael’s, Liam McElhinney, said the club would not be playing any more league games without their five county men.
McElhinney said St. Michael’s did not field in their league game against Naomh Conaill last Sunday on player welfare grounds as the game came the day after Christy Toye, Martin McElhinney and Colm McFadden had featured for Donegal against Derry in the Ulster semi final in Clones.
The County Chairman, Sean Dunnion, said it’s hoped tonight’s meeting will set out a programme of club fixtures for the remainder of the season
Meanwhile, almost half of the Tyrone club league games scheduled for this weekend have been postponed due to fears that county players may pick up injuries ahead of Tyrone’s All-Ireland SFC Qualifier on Saturday week.
This weekend’s round of fixtures are not ‘star’ games, meaning that clubs are due to have access to their county players.
But the CCC has acceded to a request from the county management to call off those ties involving Tyrone squad members, and ten matches in all have been postponed.
