Naomh Conaill claimed back-to-back Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta title
with a hard earned win over An Ghaeltacht in Ballyvourney on Monday
afternoon.
The Glenties men withstood a strong comeback from their Kerry
counterparts to take 1-16 to 2-10 victory.
The performance of Dermot ‘Brick’ Molloy was central to this win with
the number 11 taking some fine scores, and also helping out in
defence, in a game where Naomh Conaill came under strong pressure in
the second half.
Naomh Conaill led by 0-8 to 0-4 at half-time, with Molloy scoring two
first half points, and Cathal MacDonaill, Sean Ó Maille, Marty Boyle,
Leon Thompson and Aaron Mac Tomais on target.
Naomh Conaill moved six points ahead on the restart, but An Ghaeltacht
powered back thanks in no small part to Sean M Ó Conchuir who netted a
35th minute goal.
Five minutes later Naomh Conaill had the ball in the back of Tomas Mac
a tSaoir’s net, with Leon Thompson on target, with a Molloy point
ensuring they pulled six points clear soonafter.
An Ghaeltacht never gave up with Eoin Beag MacGearailt netting a 57th
minute goal to cut the gap to two points.
The Kerry side cut the gap to the minimum in injury-time, but late
points from Cathal Mac Donaill and Sean Ó Maille ensured a three-point
win.
