Following the decision by Senator David Norris to scrap his presidential campaign sources close to Dana Rosemary Scallan have indicated to Highland Radio News that she is to seek the backing of TD’s and Senators to enter the race.
Ms Scallon was an unsuccessful candidate in the 1997 Presidential election, she was subsequently elected as an MEP for the Northwest.
In May of this year Dana Rosemary Scallon stated clearly that she was not seeking to run for the Presidency, however sources close to her suggest that she is reconsidering that position following the withdrawal of Senator Norris.
In 1997 Ms Scallon received the nominations of five county councils, it was the first time it had been tried successfullty.
She finished third polling over 175,000 first preferences.
It is understood that when the Dail resumes after the summer break, Ms Scallon is to canvas TD’s and Senators with a view to securing the 20 signatures required for her to formally enter the race.
It is understood that internal polls conducted by Ms Scallon’s team have indicated she still enjoys very strong support on the west coast, with support in the Dublin area at around 25% in her target demographic.
