Campaign group concerned about job losses at Derry Railway station

The rail lobby group “Into The West” has expressed alarm at cuts in staffing and opening hours at Waterside station.
The group says that jobs have been cut in the past week and others are under threat, with some workers with 30 years plus service let go.
The group says at a time when the city is awaiting its year as UK City of Culture and events such as Fleadh Ceoil na hEireann, it’s wirrying that the station is no longer being staffed after five pm.
According to “Into the West”, this makes the Derry station more of a halt than a proper terminus for a major city.
There is only one member of staff left in the station after 5 o’clock – alone in the signalling room and not allowed to come out to help passengers who might need assistance.
The group says that after five o’clock there are no longer any toilet facilities available for departing or arriving passengers, with a similar situation pertaining at the bus station in Foyle Street after 6 o’clock.
The group says Translink has a duty to explain to the people of Derry and to the workers affected just what is happening.  The statement concludes that decisions like this affect the city as a whole and should not be taken without a public announcement, and this decision should be withdrawn immediately.
