The Vice President of the Dublin Council of Trade Unions says its not the job of local authority workers to pursue people for the household charge.
Figures show that only around 20 per cent of properties have registered and paid the 100 euro fee – out of the 1.6 million homes eligible to do so.
The Government is considering using council workers to go door to door issuing reminders to people to pay the charge – which is due by this Saturday, March 31st.
Paul McSweeney – the Chief Executive of the Local Government Management Agency – says staff who refuse to do so could face action.
However Mick O’Reilly – from the Dublin Council of Trade Unions – says putting the burden on local authority employees is outrageous:
