Donegal County Council’s Strategic Planning Policy has been told that progress is expected next month on two important projects in the county.
Work is set to start on a new ferry terminal and enterprise facility in Burtonport, while it’s expected a long awaited foreshore licence will be granted for the Riverine project which straddles the Lifford – Strabane border.
The ‘Harbour to Island’ Regeneration Project is designed to enhance facilities and opportunities in Burtonport and Arranmore Island.
Phase 2 of the project will involve the construction of a Ferry Terminal Building, which will house Donegal County Council office accommodation, a community meeting room, public facilities, ferry offices, waiting area and tourist desk facility.
There will also be a separate Enterprise Building containing a number of small mixed-use units that will help create employment opportunities and stimulate entrepreneurship.
Work on the €2.3m project is set to commence next month.
Meanwhile, the committee was told a new application has been submitted under the EU PeacePlus ‘Re-imagining Communities’ Programme for funding to complete the Riverine project, with a decision due between April and June.
Planning Consent has already been received in Donegal, with planning consent on the Strabane side expected next month, along with a foreshore licence in the Republic and a Marine Licence in the North.
