Any lingering hope that natural gas might have been brought to the North West has been dealt a blow with the publication of a new report by Gaslink.
Phase 3 of the New Town Analysis looks at the viability of 39 towns, including Ballyshannon, Bundoran, Donegal Town, Lifford and Letterkenny. However, only four towns are regarded as viable for natural gas, two in Cork, one in Tipperary and one in Meath.
The study finds that a connection from Coolkeeragh through Donegal and Sligo to link up with the Corrib line would be the best way to service the the costs involved are such that it will never be viable to do it.
However, Donegal North East TD Joe Mc Hugh says the cross border designation of a Derry Letterkenny gateway should be a key factor.
