Foyle MP Mark Durkan has welcomed a fresh inquest into the death Kathleen Thompson, who was shot by the British army in Derry in 1971.
Mr Durkan said the new inquest will allow this terrible death to be properly addressed in legal terms that were previously denied.
Ms Thompson, a 47 year old mother of six was shot dead in the garden of her Creggan home in 1971 during an Army raid on the estate.
She had gone out to warn others of the raid when the fatal shot was fired.
The soldier who fired the shot which killed her has recently been interviewed by the Historical Inquiries Team.
After studying its report, the attorney general has now ordered a fresh inquest, and it’s understood the soldier involved, named only as ‘Soldier D’, will be compelled to attend the inquest
He said the original investigation was not thorough and the evidence from the soldier will form a key part of the new inquest.
Mark Durkan says the Attorney General is right to call a new inquest on this, and other cases, which were never properly investigated by the police, and never properly treated or recognised through state justice channels.
