The Donegal based Irish Basking Shark Study Group is asking the government to provide legal protection for basking sharks.
The group is lobbying Arts, Culture and Tourism Minister Jimmy Deenihan to take action, saying the sharks can promote eco-tourism and being an economic benefit to areas such as Malin Head, particularly over the next two months when thousands of basking sharks will be in the local waters.
