Road Committee chair says new allocation is only half what’s needed

A Donegal County Councillor says this weeks announcement of additional money for the county’s roads is just half what is needed.
An additional allocation of 4 million euro was announced under the government’s new jobs initiative.
Commenting on the allocation Donegal County Council’s Roads & Transportation Committee Chairperson Cllr Jack Murray said it was  half of the €8million which is needed to repair the damaged roads across Donegal.
He expressed concerned that the Department of Transport has specified which roads are to be strengthened and that they have not considered which roads suffered the greatest damage during the severe winter.
However, Fine Junior Minister Dinny McGinley has already said the council will have discretion as to how the money is spent.
But, Councillor Murray says  the guidelines do not allow for this money to be used to fix the many potholes which have formed across Donegal in recent months.
Cllr Murray also expressed concern that the money would not create sustainable employment as indicated by the government.
