Derry City collected three massive points as they recorded a crucial 1-0 away win over St. Patrick’s Athletic to ease their relegation fears in the Premier Division.
St. Pat’s, hoping to bounce back from their 4-0 defeat by Cork in the FAI Cup last week, fell behind after 19 minutes when the influential Patrick McEleney charged forward before finding Stephen Dooley whose pass was met at the far post by the unmarked Ciaran O’Connor who headed home to delight the visiting support. McEleney also hit the post for City before the break.
But striker Cillian Morrison then picked up a second yellow card on 41 minutes to reduce City to ten men and give the home side a real boost.
Pat’s had several chances to equalise and in the 86th minute Conan Byrne missed a penalty.
But City held on for the full points.
