The Deputy Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council has called for more support and improved precautionary initiatives, following what has been described as the ‘worst flooding in years’ in the Sion Mills area.
Cllr Cara Hunter says there are ongoing problem within Sion Mills; evidently more needs to be done to safeguard homes and businesses from flooding.
In the short term, Cllr Hunter says more sandbags should be available in the area, and accessible to householders and businesses at short notices.
In the longer term, she says, the Homeowner Flood Protection Grant Scheme should be maintained, rather than closed as is currently the plan.
Most importantly, Cllr Hunter says, flood prevention measures must be funded as a matter of urgency:
