Simon Byrne resigns as PSNI Chief Constable

The head of the PSNI has resigned.

Members of the Northern Ireland policing board accepted Simon Byrne’s resignation earlier this afternoon.

Pressure had been building on the former Chief Constable following a number of high profile data breaches and a court ruling which found two junior officers were unlawfully disciplined for an arrest made at a Troubles commemoration event.

His resignation comes after an emergency meeting of the policing board earlier this afternoon.
