New life sentencing laws won’t make judge’s minimum tariff legally binding

Proposed new life sentencing laws would not make a judge’s minimum tariff legally binding.

The Justice Minister says a judge would issue a recommendation for how long a murderer would spend behind bars, but they would still be allowed to engage with the Parole Board after 12 years.

The Life Sentencing Bill would make it mandatory for the Parole Board to consider a judge’s recommendation for a minimum tariff.
