All Ireland U21C Hurling Final result: Donegal 3-07 (16) v 1-02 (5) Fermanagh
The Andrew O’Neill Cup was won by Donegal in the All Ireland U21 Final today when they beat Fermanagh at Healy Park in Omagh.
Defending champions Donegal, who were the first winners of the championship last year, had a scare from Fermanagh towards the end of the first half, when the Ernesiders briefly took the lead, but Donegal’s hurlers were otherwise in control.
Two goals from Sam Doherty and one from Paul Nelson helped to secure victory.
Donegal now progress to the U21B quarter-final in two weeks’ time when they play Kerry.
The match was slow to get going and it was not until the 12 minute that there was a score on the board.
Donegal’s Conor Grant made the score, followed by another three minutes from Aaron McCauley, and a second from him on 17 minutes made it Donegal 0-03 v 0-00 Fermanagh.
Fermangh did not score until the 23rd minute but they flickered into life to briefly turn the game on its head.
The point reduced to gap to two points and Fermanagh then surged ahead with the first goal of the game on 25 minutes to lead by one point.
Donegal responded within five points with points from Paul Nelson and Stephen Doherty to regain the lead.
At half-time, it was Donegal 0-05 (5) v 1-01 (4) Fermanagh.
Donegal began the second half, just as they had finished the first – by knocking in the scores.
They increased their advantage with a brilliant goal by Sam Doherty and two points to make it Donegal 1-07 (10) v 1-01 (4) Fermangh only nine minutes after the restart.
Fermanagh did not recover, while Donegal got another goal from Doherty and one from Nelson to run out winners by 11 points to win the Andrew O’Neill Cup Final.
