The Paralymic Games in Rio start later this evening with the opening ceremong.
Team Ireland are sending 46 athletes to the games in Brazil and there’s three from the north west.
Jason Smyth will not be at the ceremony because the Derry man is in 100m action tomorrow.
Smyth was a double gold winner in London four years ago in the 100ms and 200ms.
This time round he will only be able to target one medal as the 200 has been dropped from the games.
Galway based Buncrana women Rena McCarron Rooney will compete in table tennis.
It’s a second Paralympic games for Rena who won a European silver medal last year.
The family of Katie George Dunlevy come from Mountcharles and she will represent Ireland in tandem cycling along with her pilot Eve McCrystal from Dundalk.
The UK based visually impaired athlete is hopeful of a medal having won the time trial and the road race events at this years UCI Para-Cycling Road World Cup.
And local man Johnny Loughrey is part of the team of Physios that is with the Ireland in Rio.
