Environment Minister Phil Hogan has told the Dail that he will consider how a more coordinated response to wildfires can be achieved.
The minister was responding to Donegal Deputies Pearse Doherty and Pagraig Mac Lochlainn, who argued that there’s a need to immediately establish an inter-departmental response unit to deal with the fires that have spread across Donegal and other parts of the State.
Minister Hogan told them that some work has already been done………….
Meanwhile, Deputy Padraig Mac Lochlainn told the Dail that the destocking of commanage areas may have contributed to the devastation caused by such fires in recent years.
He says the destocking programme, which was introduced in 1998, means that there hasn’t been grazing taking place, and farmers believe that’s having an impact………..
