Hearings begin into A5 Dual Carriageway plan

The public inquiry opened in Omagh this morning into the proposed A5 dual carriageway.
Objectors called for the inquiry to be postponed, stating some people haven’t received documentation in time. One objector, Victor Christie, read correspondence from the EU comission querying the legality of the project.
Conor Loughrey from the Roads Service said that 38% of the current route is substandard, and there’s been been 15 fatal accidents on the A5 in the last four years. He said the new road would be positive in growing the economy.
He said the argument of some objectorss that a rail link would be preferable was outside the scope of the inquiry.
