Rise in Measles a cause for concern – HSE

The HSE’s Public Health Department in the North West is advising parents to make sure that their children are vaccinated against measles following a number of cases of the disease in various parts of the country.
Public Health Specialist Dr Anthony Breslin says while most children have been fully vaccinated with the MMR by the age of four, the vaccinations can be given at any point during childhood.
During this January, there have been 135 cases in Ireland whereas last year there were 164 cases for the whole year. In the North West, four cases of Measles have been diagnosed so far this year, while in 2009 no cases were reported.
He says the rise in incidents of measles across the country is a matter for concern, and parents whose children haven’t been vaccinated should act.
