Gardai investigating Co. Donegal burglaries today arrested two teenagers from Northern Ireland.
The 19-year-olds, one male, one female, appeared later before Ballyshannon District Court accused of offences in Ballyshannon in December and in January two weeks ago.
Garda Liam Feeney told the court that Lee Williams and Kerry Doherty were arrested at 1.10 a.m. near some of the burglary scenes this morning. He said: “They had no explanation for being there.”
Williams, from Ballinamallard, Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh was remanded in custody to a special sitting of Sligo District Court tomorrow night after gardai objected to bail.
Judge Kevin Kilrane indicated he could get bail if €3,000 cash was raised.
The court was told that Doherty, from Devenish Park, Garrison, Co. Fermanagh, was before a court for the first time in her life either in the North or the Republic and was very forthcoming in the investigation.
While extensive investigations were still in progress against Williams, who made statements to gardai admitting offences, Doherty did not face any more charges.
Both defendants were charged with the burglary of €12,500 worth of goods – car alloy wheels, a trailer and a quad – at East Rock, Ballyshannon, on January 4.
Williams was additionally charged with the theft of a quad from another owner at East Rock the same night and with burgling McCusker’s Filling station and adjoining Centra supermarket at Assaroe Road, Ballyshannon, on December 15, 2012.
