Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD, has described the news that a further two Anglo executives have received sentences of community service as “a slap in the face for the Irish people’.
Former Finance Director and Donegal native Willie McAteer and the bank’s former head of Irish lending Pat Whelan were found guilty by a jury in April of engaging in an illegal share support scheme in July 2008.
They have been ordered to carry out 240 hours community service or face jail.
Using the example of people being sent to prison for not having a TV licence, Deputy Doherty said it’s one rule for the golden circles and another rule for everybody else:
