The Olympic Council of Ireland has selected athletes from 10 sports in its first tranche of entries to the inaugural European Games being held in Baku, Azerbaijan in June.
Raphoe Olympian Chloe Magee and her relations Josh Magee, Rachel Darragh and Sam Magee will take part in Badminton while Derry’s Olympic Triathlete Aileen Reid is also included in the initial squad of 36 announced today.
The OCI expects to eventually field a squad of over 60 athletes to compete in 13 sports at the Games.
Pat Hickey, President of the OCI and the prime mover in the development of the European Games concept in his role as President of the European Olympic Committees, said it was an excellent addition to Ireland’s sporting calendar. “With many of the sports offering Olympic qualification possibilities for Rio 2016, these inaugural Games have caught the sporting imagination throughout the Continent and will be a superb and inspiring event”, he said.
