Hugh ‘Dick’ Doherty, a former member of the FAI Junior Council has died.
The Buncrana man who made a valuable contribution to the development of the Inishowen League, Ulster Senior League and Ulster Football Association passed away this morning.
Even at the age of 93, he was still active as Assistant Treasurer of the Inishowen Football League and a member of the Maginn Park Development Committee.
As a player he lined out with Derry City, Dundalk, Glasgow Celtic, Blackpool and Raith Rovers during the 1940s.
In 2012, he was honoured by the Ulster Football Association in appreciation for services to football. In 2013, he was the recipient of the FAI’s John Sherlock Services to Football Award and in February 2013, he was presented with the Donegal Sports Star Hall of Fame Award by FAI Chief Executive, John Delaney.
Paying tribute, on learning of the news of Hugh Doherty’s death, John Delaney said: “It was a great honour for me to get to know Hugh Doherty in recent years and see his tremendous work over the years at grassroots level in Donegal. He was extremely modest about his achievements but he played a big part in ensuring that the structures of football in Donegal are strong and robust. He will be sadly missed and I offer my sympathies, on behalf of the FAI, to his family and friends.”
