Donegal County Council to fly national flag at half mast on Monday

A Donegal councillor has reacted angrily to plans to fly the national flag at half mast at council buildings on Monday as the funeral is taking place in London of Queen Elizabeth the Second.

In a letter to members this morning, Chief Executive John McLaughlin informs them that the Department of the Taoiseach is requesting that the national flag be flown at half-mast on Monday, and the necessary arrangements are now being made.

However, Cllr Michael Cholm MacGiollaeasbuig has branded the decision a disgrace, and is urging council employees not to comply with any such requests.

He says the history of British involvement in Ireland and further afield cannot be ignored………

Taoiseach Department’s letter –

Half-Masting of National Flag on the day of the funeral of

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

A Chara,

I would appreciate if you could arrange for the flying, at half-mast, of the National Flag from all buildings, if any, under your control equipped with a permanent flagpole on Monday 19 September 2022, the day of the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Please note that if the EU flag is also flown from your building, this should be taken down while the National Flag is at half-mast.

If you have a National Flag that is illuminated, it should be similarly half-masted on the day and then returned to full mast the following morning.
