Gardaí in Donegal are warning all third-level students to be aware of rental scams.
It comes as students prepare for college in the coming weeks.
Gardai say scammers may send a false contract for students to sign or deliver fake keys to make a scam appear more convincing.
Students are advised to:
-
- Research rental prices in the area in which they are looking, and be wary if the price seems too cheap
- Never agree to rent a property without having seen it first in person
- Never use cash to pay the deposit
- Do not make any payments until you have been given the written lease and until you have ensured that the key fits the door
Gardai are urging people, if they fall victim to a rental scam or any type of scam, to alert their bank immediately, as time is of the essence if you have already transferred money, and to report the matter to Gardaí.
