Donegal has one of the highest residential vacancy levels in the country.

According to the latest GeoDirectory Residential Buildings Report, the county’s vacancy rate is 9%, almost triple the national average.

The number of new residential address points in Donegal in the second quarter of 2025 was down 6.8% compared to the same period the previous year.

667 new residential address points in Donegal added to the GeoDirectory database in the twelve months to June while 829 new residential buildings were under construction in the county last month.

Donegal recorded the lowest occupancy rate at 80.3%, up 0.4% from the second quarter of 2024.

Meanwhile, the county accounted for the highest proportion of total holiday homes in the country at 25.3%.

According to GeoDirectory, the average house price in Donegal in June was €218,739.

The lowest average rent in Ireland meanwhile, was observed in Donegal at €1,231 per month.
