Buncrana Tidy Towns halt street cleans in protest at reduction in sweeps

Buncrana Tidy Towns say they are halting their street cleaning operations in protest at the reduction of sweeps for the Main Street.

They lost access to their street sweeper after an increase in costs from a private company left them unable to afford it.

In a statement on social media, Buncrana Tidy Towns says they are asking all private citizens and businesses to look after the town, by litter picking and weeding and scraping the paths outside their facades.

Local Councillor Jack Murray says a ‘Billy Goat’ sweeper has been ordered and is expected to arrive in the next few weeks.

Cllr Murray says he will meet with his fellow Councillors later today and hopes they can come to a solution:

On today’s Nine til Noon Show, several people from Buncrana spoke out in support of the Tidy Towns Committee.

One of them, Rachel believes the upkeep of the streets should be one of the first priorities of the money raised through the rates levelled on local businesses.

She says the council shouldn’t be depending on the good will of the Tidy Towns volunteers..………..
