Derry man convicted of murder to face retrial after appeal

A Derry man who was jailed for life for the murder of his pregnant ex-girlfriend has had his conviction quashed by the Court of Appeal in Dublin.
42 year old Stephen Cahoon, whose last address was Harvey Street, Derry, admitted strangling Jean Quigley on 26 July, 2008.
However he denied it was murder.
He was found guilty of murder at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin on 30 April, 2012 after a retrial.
It was the first time a defendant was tried in the Republic for a non-terrorist crime committed in Northern Ireland. At the time, the PSNI said it showed how the law can be used to bring to justice those individuals who commit the most serious crimes, no matter where.
The case has now been successfully appealed after the defence successfully argued that the trial judge misdirected the jury while explaining the defence of provocation.
A retrial has been ordered, and Cahoon has been remanded in custody.
